A total of 71 regional awards were won by 30 students in this year’s annual
Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards - a record for D-E, which has had a handful of Middle and Upper School students win in each of the past five years. These Awards have recognized the creative talent of students in grades 7-12 nationwide since 1923, when educational publisher Scholastic Inc. founder Maurice R. Robinson also founded the Awards. Students enter their works in 29 categories for a chance to be exhibited and published. In its 93-year history, the Awards have honored student artists and writers who grew up to become household names in American culture, such as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Redford. Now run by the New York City-based nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Awards not only provide scholarships for its national winners but also programming support for all of its honored students.
“Silver and Gold Key winners will have their work put on exhibit at the Montclair Museum of Art in Montclair, NJ, for a month following the award ceremony on Thursday, February 18, from 6-9pm.
Gold Key winners whose pieces will now leave the regional and enter the national competition:
As for the Writing Awards, English department chair Fred Daly announced that D-E students “received a total of 62 awards, 14 in the Middle School and 48 in the Upper School. This has to be a school record. It looks like we're doing something right.”
