4 Artists, 26 Writers Win Scholastic Awards 2016

A total of 71 regional awards were won by 30 students in this year’s annual Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards - a record for D-E, which has had a handful of Middle and Upper School students win in each of the past five years. These Awards have recognized the creative talent of students in grades 7-12 nationwide since 1923, when educational publisher Scholastic Inc. founder Maurice R. Robinson also founded the Awards. Students enter their works in 29 categories for a chance to be exhibited and published. In its 93-year history, the Awards have honored student artists and writers who grew up to become household names in American culture, such as Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Joyce Carol Oates and Robert Redford. Now run by the New York City-based nonprofit Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Awards not only provide scholarships for its national winners but also programming support for all of its honored students.

The Awards begin with a regional round awarding students with Silver and Gold Keys, as well as Honorable Mentions. Those pieces that receive Gold Keys move on to the national round, where they are then in the running for Silver and Gold Medals - to be awarded in June.
