Bill Yaffa ESB ’69 Redirects Medical Essentials During Pandemic

William “Bill” Yaffa ESB ’69, senior vice president of BMT Commodity Corp., has spent more than 45 years working as an importer and distributor of raw materials that are environmentally friendly. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Yaffa has been working to redirect virus guard fabrics and barrier screens to those who manufacture masks and face shields for front-line medical workers.
“Time is of the essence to get our fabrics to the right parties who can convert them into masks and barrier screens,” says Yaffa, of his work at BMT, an international merchant and distributor specializing in natural, biodegradable and environmentally friendly products used in a variety of markets.

With the COVID-19 outbreak leading to a shortage of necessities for medical professionals, a number of companies are coming together with their infrastructure and expertise to create supplies. BMT, which sells AllergyGuard and VirusGuard Fabric that block most bacteria and allergens, is hoping to partner with companies who can make masks and barrier screens to fight COVID-19.

BMT and  Bill are not only trying to help in the fight against Covid-19 by selling masks, but they are also doing their best to give companies who have the ability to convert the BMT VirusGuard Fabrics into finished products the opportunity to stay in or grow their businesses.

“We have enjoyed a very enthusiastic response from many parties in the short period of time since becoming involved in the mask and barrier screen fabric market,” Yaffa says. “We all look forward to better days ahead.

While a student at the Englewood School for Boys (ESB), Bill was a member of the varsity cross country and basketball teams, the sports editor of the ESB yearbook, and an editor of the ESB newspaper, then called the Spectator.

After graduating from ESB in 1969, Bill attended Hobart and William Smith Colleges. While there Yaffa majored in history, was the goalie for the soccer team and sports editor for the yearbook. Following graduation, he returned to Dwight-Englewood School where he taught history and economics for a year, before joining his father’s importing company, Hanson & Orth, Inc., in Darien, Conn. After working 4 years, the company was sold, and Yaffa stayed on with the new owner, Harrison & Crosfield. He has served as senior vice president at BMT Commodity since 1989.
In 1994, Bill returned to the D-E campus for his 25th reunion celebration for the ESB Class of 1969. During the reunion weekend, he reconnected with Lynn Lieblich Jeffery Dwight 1969 and they married shortly soon after. Lynn and Bill now reside in Westport, Connecticut. Together with a strong committee, they co-chaired the ESB and Dwight Classes of 1969 resounding successful 50th reunion in June 2019 at D-E.
