D-E was well represented in terms of student participation in the weeks leading up to and during the event. Senior Brian Breslin ('12) served on the panel of judges that whittled legions of hopefuls in initial auditions to a trim dozen semi-finalists who will compete for the trophy this week. Austen Tosone (’12) co-hosted the show this year, and Max Miller (’12) served as D-E’s audio engineer.
This year's winner Brian Park follows capably the path set by D-E alumna Erika Butler '11; last year, the soulful singer won the singing competition, while D-E’s Six Chix won Best Dance Crew.
D-E English Department faculty member and Englewood Idol co-producer, Vicky Frankel, enthusiatically tells us, "In addition to pulling together many talented Bergen County high school students who live in or attend school in Englewood, (our performance) preparations also united a large group of D-E students with diverse backgrounds. Freshmen have bonded with seniors, hip hop stylists with classic dancers, and country with torch singers, as all have collaborated in artistic production."
Englewood Idol proceeds (from ticket and merchandise sales) go to the Dr. John Greico Scholarship Fund, a student-run nonprofit charity led by Judy Aronson '78, a D-E alumna and Social Studies teacher at Academies@Englewood and Dwight Morrow. Aronson and Frankel met years ago at the annual Teens Talk About Racism conference at Fairleigh Dickenson and have been collaborating on Englewood Idol ever since, pleased to have an opportunity to bring together Englewood students who enjoy showcasing their talents and competing while raising money for a most worthy cause.
