D-E Students Attend Princeton U Race Symposium

Liz Tausner

On Friday, April 27, 2012, Princeton Prize winners from 24 regions across the United States joined local high school students, including five Upper School students from Dwight-Englewood, for conversations on race relations and special presentations by Professor Anne Cheng and Michelle Minter, Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer of Princeton University.

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations was created to identify and commend young people who are working to increase understanding and mutual respect among all races. In order to recognize, support, and encourage the young people of our country who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the cause of positive race relations, Princeton University sponsors an annual awards program for the race relations projects of high school students—the Princeton Prize in Race Relations. In addition to a $1000 cash award, regional winners are invited to Princeton’s campus for an all-expenses paid trip to attend the Princeton Prize Symposium on Race. Sponsored by the class of 1966, this 2 ½ day event includes conversations and workshops on race relations with local high school students, Princeton students, alumni and faculty.

The following D-E Upper School students attended the Symposium: Olivia Britton ‘14, Michael Chen ‘14, Daniel Garcia ‘13, Misha Inniss-Thompson ‘12, and Nisreen Yonis ‘13. Director of Multicultural Affairs Clinton L. Carbon chaperoned the group.

Mr. Carbon commented:  “With the Princeton Prize, the University intends to reach beyond its own campus to recognize the efforts of America's next generation of leaders... The day was filled with great ideas about promoting positive race relations. The projects of the award winners were inspiring and it was another excellent opportunity for (our) D-E students to meet other young people on a national level. We also enjoyed the opportunity to say hello to D-E alumna and Princeton U. freshman Bianca DiGiovanni, D-E '11, who stopped by to see us ( during the Symposium)."
