"Voices & Choices" is the theme for this year's AIDS Awareness Week. The week-long program kicks off on Monday, February 11, with daily programming on the club's "concern about those who are now affected by HIV/AIDS as well as preventing ongoing discrimination." All Upper School students as well as faculty/staff and parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. (Important, Please Note: The AIDS Awareness Dinner and Live Concert originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8 is now re-scheduled for Thursday, March 7. See below for further details.)
In keeping with their ongoing commitment to "helping our peers not only understand the larger medical epidemic in our country and around the world, but also the importance of how various communities are affected," AIDS Awareness has organized a series of presentations featuring a variety of intriguing perspectives.
On Monday, February 11, two speakers will be presenting in Hulst House: Hackensack University Medical Center's Director of Clinical Virology Dr. Gary Munk and Dr. Julia Piwoz, infectious disease specialist and pediatrician. On Tuesday, February 12, AIDS Awareness welcomes New Jersey AIDS Services (NJAS), whose mission is to visit schools to educate youth about HIV/AIDS. NJAS staff and trained professionals will give a presentation on "the modes of transmission, risky behaviors, and general HIV/AIDS facts", followed by an NJAS client, who will talk about living with HIV. On Wednesday, February 13, Ryan Mion, Outreach Coordinator for the Ryan White Program at Bergen Family Center, will talk about the center's support groups and other services for those diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.
D-E's AIDS Awareness Week then concludes with the Upper School Assembly on Thursday, February 14, with a visit from actor Ron Goldberg of the film, "
How to Survive a Plague", which explores the work of two coalitions—ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition.
To help finesse the messages of AIDS Awareness, a Dinner and Live Concert event will then take place on Thursday, March 7, in the school's Hajjar Auditorium. (This event was originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8, but postponed due to winter weather.) The March 7 Dinner will be at 6:30 and catered by La Promenade, followed by an 8 p.m. Live Concert.
Performances during the Live Concert will feature Upper School students Julia Brice '14, Gina Marie Enriquez '14, Olivia Garcia '16, Kylah Gonzalez '13, Rachel Hechler '16, Nigel Lassiter '14 and Melissa Rosner '15. Tickets are $40 general admission to both the Dinner and the Live Concert; $20 for students, faculty and staff; and $10 for the Live Concert only. All net proceeds will benefit causes in support of AIDS awareness, and donations at the door are also appreciated.
If past AIDS Awareness Week programs are any indication, "Voices & Choices" should promise to be both memorable and meaningful.
