Board of Trustees Members Honored

Two members of the D-E Board of Trustees, Dr. John Hajjar and Phoebe Boyer, recently received significant achievements and honors.

Dr. John Hajjar, our Board of Trustees President and the Benefactor of the new Hajjar STEM Center, has been announced as a winner of the Ernst & Young (E&Y) Entrepreneur of the Year Award for New Jersey.  John's award recognizes entrepreneurial excellence in the category of Health Systems.

A Diplomate of the American Board of Urology with nearly 25 years of practice experience, Dr. John H. Hajjar is the CEO of Sovereign Medical Group.  In addition to caring for patients with a wide range of urology conditions, he has also dedicated much of his time to advancing the accessibility of effective medical care in the New Jersey area.  Dr. Hajjar is the founder and chairman of Surgem, a company that manages surgery centers, and also founded six surgery centers since 1993, currently serving as Medical Director of SurgiCare Surgical Associations in Fair Lawn.  He also founded and remains actively involved with two medical technology companies that aim to improve many practices within the healthcare industry.

In his acceptance remarks at a recent ceremony hosted by Ernst & Young, he commented:  "It was a privilege to have been considered alongside the other entrepreneurs who serve as pioneers in industries such as medicine, business, education and financial services.... Sovereign has been able to facilitate its exponential growth over many years by assembling a talented group of medical professionals from primary care physicians to specialists in areas such as urology, cardiology, [and] oncology.  [Our leadership team] will continue to innovate in the business of delivering first class medicine, through focused centers of excellence."

"I owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the dedication of my management team and our doctors.  The success I've had with Sovereign could not have been achieved without the incredible support of my wife, Sharon, of 35 years, and my three sons:  Marc (D-E '07); Brian (D-E '11); and Michael (D-E '11). "
