Robert M. Bakish, President and CEO of Viacom International Media Networks, and a graduate of the Dwight-Englewood School's Class of 1981, has been confirmed as the Keynote Speaker for 2011 Commencement. The graduation ceremony is scheduled for this Sunday, June 5 at 10:00 a.m. on Leggett Field at the D-E School campus.
In his leadership role with
Viacom, Bakish has responsibility for all Viacom media networks outside the United States, including MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, BET, Paramount Pictures TV, Colors, Viva, TMF and GameOne. He also serves as Chairman of the Board of Viacom 18 in India and is Director of Viacom’s joint ventures with BSkyB in the United Kingdom and Telecom Italia Media in Italy. Mr. Bakish joined Viacom as Senior Vice President for Planning, Development and Technology after a successful career in advertising with Booz Allen and Hamilton in their Media and Entertainment Practice.
Mr. Bakish holds a B.S. from Columbia University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science (’85) and an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School (’89). He currently sits on the Columbia Business School Board of Overseers and the Columbia School of Engineering and Applied Science Board of Visitors. He served as Chairman of the Cable Television Advertising Bureau and a director of Avid Technology, Inc. Bakish will also be honored this weekend with the D-E Distinguished Alumni Award, at the School's
Alumni Reunion taking place this Saturday, June 4.
The 2011 Commencement will also include remarks from Head of School Dr. Rodney V. De Jarnett, Upper School Principal Joseph Algrant, and Dwight-Englewood School Board of Trustees President Karen Aboodi. In addition to the traditional awarding of diplomas the ceremony will also include a presentation of special School awards to honorees of the Class of 2011, instrumental and vocal performances, and speeches by select members of the Class of 2011, There will be a celebratory reception immediately following the conclusion of the ceremony, also on Leggett Field.
