Elliot Roman ’17
Hailing from Haworth, NJ, Elliot Roman ’17 is a D-E Lifer having been enrolled in all three division of the school. Elliot’s older sister, Danielle Roman ’15, is also a graduate from D-E.
Ever since Elliot was a child, he has been performing and composing music. Elliot highlights one of the greatest thing about D-E as the freedom to adjust the assignment’s subject to align with student’s interest. He furthers, “for example, my essays and projects were concentrated on the music of whichever time period we were studying (Music of Ancient Greece in ninth grade, The Evolution of the Piano in tenth grade, and Jazz/Speakeasies/Rent Parties in the Harlem Renaissance in eleventh grade).”
As a senior, Elliot’s Honors Senior Focus project was a culmination of all of the academic work and produced music during his years at D-E. Elliot shares details of his Honors Senior Focus project: “for the first semester, I researched the phenomenon of musical earworms and how composers could leverage the concept in their compositions. I decided to try implementing this concept into my music during the second semester by composing a 13-minute orchestral composition. This large-scale project was a way in which I could mix my academic background with my musical knowledge, a goal that D-E helped me achieve.” More than a dozen of D-E performing arts faculties and Upper School students gathered in Hajjar Auditorium and performed Elliot’s final orchestral composition for his Honors Senior Focus project presentation.
Elliot will be attending Manhattan School of Music this fall.
