The MS girls came back to beat a very deep and talented EMS team 22-21 in a thrilling come from behind victory. The game was a revenge game for the lady bulldogs who lost to the impressive EMS team earlier in the season. In front of the entire middle school at our annual "pack the gym" event, the team came out a bit slow falling behind 11-2 in the first quarter, but after a very strong second quarter they took the lead by one going into halftime. After a back and forth third and forth quarters, the bulldogs trailed the game by 2 late in the 4th quarter but were able to tie the game up with about a minute to go. After another impressive defensive stand, Hannah Gordon gathered in a half court pass and pushed ahead to attempt a lay up and despite missing, she was fouled. After hitting one of two free throws with 12 seconds to go, we had to have one strong defensive possession to hold off EMS. They were able to force EMS into a desperation shot that went way long and secure an exciting win that was easily our highlight of the season and also ensured an above .500 record for our season. Excellent shutdown defense played by Ryan Rodgers, Victoria Kong, Emily Nebens, Linda Chen and Lilly Arang. Strong offensive performance by 8th grader Victoria Kong also in her second to last game as a MS student.
The girls lost a tough battle to a very strong MKA team this past week. It was easily our most challenging and talented opponent of the season, and although the lady bulldogs were able to hold the physical and fast MKA girls to only 24 points, the swarming MKA defense proved too much to overcome. The team improved tremendously in their physicality, specifically with rebounding and help defense as they experimented with a 2-1-2 defense for the first time this year.
The girls MS basketball team added a fifth victory to their record improving to 5-4 on the season with a strong 26-4 win against Trinity on Thursday. The game served as a chance for Jenna Galgano to get her feet wet at the point guard position, and she ran a strong offense. The team moved the ball well, played very aggressive defense and rebounded at a more consistent pace than in recent games. Strong breakout performances from Phoebe Snyder, Chloe Levi, and Anika Russak. 8th graders Sydney Markson and Emily Nebens also added a few baskets. The DE middle School girls lost to another strong team in Ho-Ho Kus on Tuesday. We found it difficult to contain many of their bigger inside players. Ho-Ho Kus quickly jumped out to a lead that proved too difficult for the Bulldogs to overcome. Strong second half performances from Lilly Arang and Hannah Gordon as the Bulldogs put many more points on the board in the second half, but in the end Ho-Ho Kus was able to pull out a 36-19 point victory.
The MS girls basketball team lost a hard fought battle to a very physical and strong Bergenfield team. The bulldogs tried at times to use their speed to push Bergenfield, and although this worked at times, rebounding was very difficult. Bergenfield crashed hard to the boards and their aggressiveness was difficult to fend off. The bulldogs tried hard, however, and played tough until the final whistle. It was an excellent team effort overall as the team refused to be pushed around, but in the end Bergenfield's strength and size allowed them to edge us out by a score of 30-20. Great leadership by Emily Katz, and another breakout game for 6th grader Jenna Glagano. Lilly Arang also played very strong. Inside, Ryan Rodgers and Victoria Kong played their hearts out battling for rebounds and doing their best to contain their size on defense. Both girls played excellent games despite minor injuries. Although not a victory, this gutsy performance demonstrated our teams' tremendous ability to come together and get the most out of each other. The MS lady bulldogs played hard and strong to beat a depleted Alpine Middle School team on Thursday 32-6. Alpine had only 5 players, but the DE girls put together some good passing and the motion offense really came together well. While turnovers were a problem, the biggest improvement to note was an impressive defense and excellent rebounding. Phoebe Snyder, Julia Taub and Peri Cook enjoyed extended playing time and all played very well. Ryan Rodgers and Victoria Kong both also played very strong gathering in several rebounds and scoring on multiple put packs. Emily Katz led the offense at point guard for most of the game and her strong leadership kept the offense moving well. In addition, she added 8 points of her own. Excellent team effort from start to finish.
The girls MS team regained their winning ways in their fifth game of the season yesterday to improve their record to 3-2. Moving the ball well and focusing a bit more on jump shots, the team dominated a thin Trinity team 39-10. Highlights included strong rebounding and inside performance from Ryan Rodgers, good shooting and ball movement from Anika Russak. Jenna Galgano and Julia Taub both had strong breakout performances as well. Every player was able to get several minutes of playing time and overall it was a great team effort from start to finish. The Girls MS Basketball team suffered their second loss of the season to a strong and well-coached group from MKA. The opponents were deep, with 20 girls on their team, strong and fast. The bulldogs played strong pressure defense especially early and late in the game, forcing multiple turnovers and playing with heart and strength. They were able to hold MKA to only 13 at halftime. The offense was a bit flustered, however, by MKA's size and depth and struggled for much of the game to put together a run. Their were numerous fouls committed by both teams which slowed the pace of the game way done and played away from the Bulldog's strength. In the end, The bulldogs battled but were defeated 28-20. Strong overall performances from Hannah Brown, Anika Russak, Phoebe Snyder and Linda Chen as well as starters Ryan Rodgers, Emily Katz, Lilly Arang, Hannah Brown and Victoria Kong.
The girls team suffered their first loss today against a strong and fast Elisabeth Morrow squad. After a very slow start, the team played mach harder and tougher to close the "Eagles" lead down to three with 2 minutes to play. But in the end EMS held on to their lead and to pull out a 27-21 victory. Ryan Rodgers, Victoria Kong and Emily Katz all had strong second half performances.
