International Student Information
Often, colleges and universities have a separate application or supplement pertaining to International
students. Many colleges review international students separately from their domestic applicants and
require additional information. It is strongly advised that International students meet with their College
Counseling Director to review additional information that may be required.
I-20
Students who are not permanent residents (Green Card holders) or citizens of the United
States are required to secure an international student visa (I-20). The D-E Admissions
Office is the designated school official (DSO) who manages/authorizes student visas.
International students are required to contact the D-E Admissions Office to request the
transfer of their records to their enrolled college.
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
TOEFL is taken by students whose native language is not English and is often required of
international students as a supplement to the SAT verbal score. The TOEFL is offered via
the Internet and is available world-wide. The College Guidance Office recommends
students take the TOEFL summer before or fall of senior year.
Financial Statement
Many colleges require international students to submit a declaration of funds. This is a
statement from your parents’ bank indicating in American dollars your family’s ability to
afford at least one year (and as much as four years) of college. Students need to confirm
what is needed by each college in their declaration of funds. Most colleges and universities
will not send a student their admissions decision until the supporting financial
documentation has been received.
